Exploratory Advising Career Ladder

Exploratory Advisors and CAS Undeclared Advisors in the University Advising Center have a dedicated career ladder to formally recognize additional duties performed by these advisors. 

Exploratory Advisor/CAS Undeclared Advisor II

To advance to an Exploratory Advisor/CAS Undeclared Advisor II position, current Exploratory and CAS Undeclared Advisors must do the following: 

  1. Serve as an Exploratory Advisor I or CAS Undeclared Advisor I for a minimum of 18 months
  2. Successfully complete the Exploratory Advising Tier II Mastery Rubrics
  3. Participate in a 60 minute conference with the UAC Tier Review Committee and their current supervisor
  4. Submit a complete, internal application to the UAC Tier Review Committee

Some components of the application are outlined below: 

  • Achieve Level I and Level II Certification in the USC Advisor Training Program
  • Mastery Rubrics for Exploratory Advisor Level I
  • Advise a minimum of 300 students for Exploratory/Major Change Advising
  • Shadow at least 7 other academic advisors' appointments

Apply for Tier II Advancement

Exploratory/CAS Undeclared Advisor I's  who have been in their position for 18 months or more should complete the online application for advancement. 



Exploratory Advisor/CAS Undeclared Advisor III

To advance to an Exploratory Advisor/CAS Undeclared Advisor III position, current Exploratory and CAS Undeclared Advisors must do the following: 

  1. Serve as an Exploratory Advisor II or CAS Undeclared Advisor II for a minimum of 18 months
  2. Participate in a 60 minute conference with the UAC Tier Review Committee and their current supervisor
  3. Submit a complete, internal application to the UAC Tier Review Committee

Some components of the application are outlined below: 

  • Achieve Level III Certification in the USC Advisor Training Program
  • Advise a minimum of 1200 unique students for ExploratoryAdvisors/Academic Coaches or 800 unique students for CAS Undeclared Advisors 
  • Advisor Reflection and Advising Practice Questions

Apply for Tier III Advancement

Exploratory/CAS Undeclared Advisor II's who have been in their position for 18 months or more should complete the online application for advancement. 

 

Exploratory Advisor/CAS Undeclared Advisor IV

To advance to an Exploratory Advisor/CAS Undeclared Advisor IV position, current Exploratory and CAS Undeclared Advisors must do the following: 

  1. Serve as an Exploratory Advisor III or CAS Undeclared Advisor III for a minimum of 18 months
  2. Prepare a 20-30 minute presentation on a program they manage as part of their Tier III duties. The presentation should include reflection on the changes between state of the program at the time of the applicant’s assumption of management duties and its current state. Applicants should invite at least one campus partner with whom the applicant works closely (in the context of the program) to attend the presentation. After the presentation the applicant should be prepared for a 20-30 minute Q&A/discussion session.  
  3. Submit a complete, internal application to the UAC Tier Review Committee.
  4. Participate in a 60 minute conference with the UAC Tier Review Committee and their current supervisor

Some components of the application are outlined below: 

  • Achieve Level IV Certification in the USC Advisor Training Program
  • Advise a minimum of 1500 unique students for ExploratoryAdvisors/Academic Coaches or 1000 unique students for CAS Undeclared Advisors 
  • Advisor Reflection Questions

Exploratory/CAS Undeclared Advisor III's who have been in their position for 18 months or more should complete the online application for advancement.
