First Year Freshmen on Probation: Impact of Academic Coaching on GPA

Bar chart titled “First Year Freshmen on Probation End of Year Cumulative GPAs” comparing two groups across academic years 2010–11 through 2024–25. For each year, two bars are shown: a lower gray bar for students with no coaching appointment (GPAs roughly ~0.3–1.2) and a higher red bar for students attending 1+ coaching appointments (GPAs roughly ~1.6–2.1). In every year, the coached group has a noticeably higher average GPA than the non-coached group, with the gap typically around 0.5–1.0 GPA points. Overall pattern shows consistently better outcomes for students who participated in coaching.

* The number of first years on probation who enroll in spring semester coursework is less than the number of students placed on probation at the end of fall semester due to attrition, retroactive grade postings that raise GPAs above probation level, and other unique circumstances.
**Note: 2019-2020 data is impacted by COVID 19-related special provisions for expanded pass/fail grading approved by the Faculty Senate for the spring 2020 semester.
