The Richard D. Adams Lecture in Inorganic Chemistry was established in 2025 to honor the distinguished Prof. Adams and the many contributions he made to inorganic and organometallic chemistry.
Departmental Seminars
The department maintains a vigorous weekly seminar program featuring outstanding speakers from academic institutions and other laboratories and industries.
Departmental seminars are normally scheduled at 4:00 PM on Friday in the Jones Physical Science Center, Room 006. Divisional Seminars
Divisional seminars are offered by each of the five divisions of the department. These seminars are given by local visitors from industry and academia as well as by second-and third-year graduate students delivering their required seminars.
Named Seminars
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry brings some of the most eminent scientific scholars in the world to Columbia every year with six endowed lectureships.
The H. Willard Davis Lecture Series
In 1977, the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, in association with the University of South Carolina Educational Foundation, announced the establishment of the H. Willard Davis Lectures.
The Ronald R. Fisher Lecture in Biochemical Sciences
The Ronald R. Fisher Lecture in Biochemical Sciences was established in 1985 by friends and relatives of Ron Fisher (1941–85) in memory of the many contributions that he made to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of the University of South Carolina.
The Murtiashaw Memorial Lectureship in Organic Chemistry
The Murtiashaw Memorial Lectureship in Organic Chemistry has been established by friends and relatives of Bill Murtiashaw (1951–1995).
The Guy F. Lipscomb Lectures in Chemistry and Biochemistry
The Guy F. Lipscomb Lectures in Chemistry and Biochemistry were established in 1996 to honor a dedicated and distinguished professor (1920–49) and chair of USC's Department of Chemistry (1930–49).
The Fred M. Weissman Lecture in Analytical Chemistry
Frederick M. Weissman, M.D., graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1936 with a degree in chemistry.
The Arthur S. Williams Lecture
These lectures began in 1996, when a gift from Dr. Williams established the Arthur Sease Williams Distinguished Professorship in Chemistry.
