Federal Litigation Clinic

The Federal Litigation Clinic introduces third-year students to federal civil practice and allows them to gain hands-on experience representing individuals before the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina.

About

The United States District Court for the District of South Carolina appoints the clinic to represent indigent pro se litigants in cases pending before it. Many of these cases are civil rights cases filed under 42 U.S.C. § 1983, though sometimes other types of claims maybe at issue. The Court appoints the clinic in what are called limited scope appointments, where the clinic represents a client for a specific limited purpose or specific aspect of the litigation, such as filing amended pleadings, conducting discovery, drafting or responding to a particular motion, participating in mediation, or any other purpose the Court determines will serve the interests of justice.

Law students begin to develop a variety of legal skills, including:

  • Client interviewing and counseling
  • Fact investigation
  • Case management and strategy
  • Drafting court documents
